A “kill screen” is a glitch in old arcade games where something rolls over in such a way that the game glitches out and the only thing you can do is get a Game Over. This is because older arcade games were supposed to go on forever, but they never actually tested them beyond a certain set of levels.
In Donkey Kong, the stage timer becomes impossibly short, and Mario dies from a Time Over within a few seconds after starting the level.
In Pac-Man, half the screen becomes corrupted, and there is no longer enough dots to eat to clear the stage… though it has recently been found that there is a way to get enough dots without dying to clear the stage.
To add to that, the games usually hit a kill screen because the number used to create the levels rolled over- in 8 bit, the highest number you can get without cheating(that is, merging two 8 bit variable to create a 16 bit variable) is 255 (8^2 is 256 and you need one of those for 0, so 0 to 255)
Most games would act normally until you beat level 255, at which point the level rolls over to 0, but since they were supposed to start at level 1, the game tries to read level data that doesn’t exist from a place in the game’s code that is something other than level information. This is similar to how level -1 exists in Super Mario Brothers. Games that were properly coded in anticipation of rolling past 255 levels included level data in position 0, or had a mechanism to skip to level 1 properly.
What is the way to get enough dots to pass the level? I couldn’t find anything about this by searching online. The only ways that I know of are to use the level advance service switch or to patch the ROM so that the bug doesn’t occur. I don’t know of any way to get past this level during regular gameplay on an unmodified machine.
Yeah, Tim bought some Ramune for our family Christmas this year. We just thought he was being nice, turns out he wanted a model for the comic! Tch! Typical! xD
Am I the only one hoping the new Mario movie is a sequel to the first? I mean they left us with such a nail biting cliffhanger I still get upset not knowing what happens next.
I hope that the next strip will show that XD. Even tough Kade is my favorite, I would love to see his expression when he sees that.
It seems we’re doomed and will never learn what’s happened when ……….
The old live-action Mario movie was already this worse ?
4/10 on IMDb and 15% on Rotten Tomatoes.
From clips I’ve seen, yeah it’s bad.
Oooooo-kay; I’ll bite… What’s a “kill screen”? 🙂
(Can you tell I’m not a gamer? 😉 )

Thanks, Techokami! 🙂

8^2 is actually 64 (8*8). You meant to say 2^8 (2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2), which is in fact 256.
yeah that kill screen was shown in Wreck-It Ralph around the Walt Disney logo at the end of the movie

Did anyone else notice that Rick’s holding a Ramune bottle?
Yeah I caught that, too. Was happily surprised.
My time to ask… What’s a Ramune bottle, please…?
=^_^”=
“Ramune is a type of carbonated soft drink originally created and sold in Japan.”
Pulled from Wikipedia. I’ve had it before, it has a little marble in it that rattles around while you drink.

Such dedication!
In the fourth panel , i love Nicole’s face : “- Oh no , not this story again” XD
Hey! I mean, I know that the movie was terrible, but I loved it anyway. So campy, so cheesy, so… Barely Mario.
Also, bonus points for John Leguizamo and Bob Hoskins being full-on drunk for 95% of filming.

Great. Are they going to bring Bob Hoskins back from the dead, too? I mean clearly they have an animatronic Dennis Hopper in the Hall of Presidents…
A new Super Mario movie??! Must see!!
Happy furry new year by the way.
In the panels three and four , why i’m expecting to see Pac-man go out of the screen and nom on Kade’s nose ? XD
Too : new charm for Kade ? ^_^

Take a thing of salt throw it over your shoulder that normally destorys guesses and omans
Either this aged like wine or milk. Don’t know yet but there is all that buzz with Chris Pratt.
I’m here from the future. It’s ok Kade, the Mario movie was great 🙂
